AMA Updates PLA Codes: Reaches 0202U With Biofire COVID Panel Test

On May 20, 2020, AMA updated its PLA codes with a new rapid code for the Biofire panel test now including COVID-19 (SARS CoV 2).

See the AMA homepage for COVID here, and the currently released new code list here.

Most of the May 20 list simply replicates those codes released April 1, 2020, and effective July 1, 2020.  These went through 0201U, the last code included in the CMS summer pricing meeting.   However, the update adds one code - both released and effective for use on May 20, 2020 - giving us an additional COVID test code.

The code text for 0202U is:

Infectious disease (bacterial or viral respiratory tract infection), pathogenspecific nucleic acid (DNA or RNA), 22 targets including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2),
qualitative RT-PCR, nasopharyngeal swab, each pathogen reported as detected or not detected.

...which is the Biofire Respiratory Panel 2.1 test (RP 2.1).

ASCO updated a guidance document on COVID testing as of May 28, 2020, see link here.  It includes all codes today, even "C" codes, as well as CMS U-codes, PLA codes, and rapidly created AMA CPT codes in the 80,000 series.
