USPSTF Meeting Canceled; Conservative Journal Recommends Dumping USPSTF

Several concurrent events on July 9, 2025.

The conservative journal, The American Conservative, published a detailed essay on why the USPSTF is too woke and should be discontinued.  Here.

Concurrently, HHS announced that an upcoming USPSTF meeting is "canceled last minute."  (The meeting for Thursday was canceled on Wednesday). [*]

The cancelation was then written about, by news sources like Axios (here), Stat (here), Fierce Healthcare (here) and MedPageToday (here). See a letter to Congress from 100 stakeholders here.

In June 2025, the Supreme Court decided the Braidwood case (Rockeller Institute memo).  At district and appeal court levels, the Braidwood litigants had "won," arguing that the USPSTF and its effect on private insurance preventive coverage, were legally improper.

Supreme Court reversed the lower rulings, finding that USPSTF was in fact under the control of the Secretary of Health.  The Secretary could decline to allow its decisions, one by one, or, could dismiss one or all of the panelists.

The lengthy and detailed American Conservative article, appearing at the same time as the cancelation, finds that USPSTF "has used that authority to launder left-wing ideological orthodoxy into its preventive care recommendations, from gender theory (referring to women as “individuals born with a cervix”) to critical race theory (urging doctors to take into account “systemic racism”)." [Joseph Addington].
